DESCRIPTION:On the Sunday before Easter Sunday\, known as Palm Sunday\
, Christian churches commemorate the biblical tradition of Jesus&#8217
\; entry into Jerusalem. He rode into the Holy City on a donkey\, as t
he Bible reports\, where the faithful cut branches from the trees\, sp
read them on the ground\, and thus prepared the way for Jesus. Christi
an tradition has interpreted these branches as palm branches\, from wh
ich the German word &#8220\;Palmsonntag&#8221\; is derived. The Euchar
istic celebration on the morning of Palm Sunday opens the liturgy of H
oly Week. The account in the Gospels that Jesus deliberately rode into
the Holy City on a donkey is interpreted in research as Jesus wanted
to connect with prophetic announcements of God&#8217\;s &#8220\;Anoint
ed One\,&#8221\; the &#8220\;Messiah&#8221\; (Greek: Christos)\, in th
e writings of biblical Israel and refer them to himself. For one\, it
is reported about the prophet Nathan that he\, together with the pries
t Zadok\, placed Solomon on King David&#8217\;s mule and led him to Je
rusalem to proclaim him as the &#8220\;Anointed One&#8221\; chosen by
God. On the other hand\, the prophet Zechariah is recorded as saying t
hat the end-time &#8220\;Anointed One&#8221\; of God will ride into Je
rusalem on a donkey. By choosing to ride into the Holy City on a donke
y\, Jesus symbolically indicated that he was the &#8220\;Anointed&#822
1\; of God\, the Christos\, foretold by the prophets of biblical Israe
 l. Against this biblical background\, in many Western churches\, belie
vers bring palm branches to the Sunday Eucharistic celebration\, where
they are blessed. Eastern Christian traditions associate Jesus&#8217\
; entry into Jerusalem with Jesus&#8217\; raising of Lazarus. Through
this\, these texts aim to remind us that Jesus is the Lord over life a
nd death\, who indeed died on the cross on Good Friday but rose again
from the dead on Easter night.
